Facing the Inevitable, 2024
The portrait shows Ribeiro's mother in her brother's bedroom contemplating the changes that have occurred in that space over time. The piece is an exploration of the Empty Nest Syndrome - an often-overlooked form of grief where parents must adjust to their children growing up and leaving home. Ribeiro approached the brief through discussions with her family, considering how she could make it both relevant to them yet personal to herself. This led her to create an image that aims to communicate the emptiness felt by a parent as a child grows into an adult.
